Waltrop lies at the northern edge of the Ruhr area – it is like a bridge between the urban industrial area and the rural Münsterland.

Due to that the city of Waltrop is easily accessible via different motorways, e.g. the A2 (Oberhausen – Hannover) and the A 45 (Sauerlandlinie).

The closest train stations can be found in Recklinghausen and Dortmund, which are between 15 and 20 km away from Waltrop.

The city is also accessible via ship on the Dortmund-Ems-Kanal and the Datteln-Hamm-Kanal.
